Effective communication at transaction and interaction points is critically important yet often overlooked. It is common in the architecture, glass and window industries, when doing design and/or buildout, to utilize what are known as “passive speak-thrus”. These are essentially metal grids that are inserted into a hole that has been cut into the glass and the expectation is that sound, in this case, a voice, will transmit or transfer through the metal grid and to the opposite side of the glass. Also baffled windows, or overlapping panes of glass, are relied on heavily, as well as just the pass through tray under the glass, as a method to transmit sound and conversation back and forth.

The issue with this is that sound quality and volume will diminish as it travels this route and, by the time it reaches the intended recipient of the message, it is hard to hear and understand due in large part to attenuation. These may look good, in some instances, and of course cost a bit less, but provide ineffective methods of communication. Not easy to transact personal or business banking transactions, purchase tickets or obtain directions, purchase tickets, or conduct other forms of business if you simply cannot hear well.

The challenge is changing historical thought processes and industry norms so that proper consideration is given to the importance of a quality, electronic window intercoms. Electronic intercoms, sometimes called talk-thrus, are essential to providing effective communication through these glass barriers. These can be installed during buildout or retroactively in existing windows. Essentially, they provide amplified sound via use of a microphone and speaker on both the visitor/customer side of the window as well as on the staff side. These are controlled by a head end unit known as an amplifier or driver. Some of them even have a hearing loop to provide ADA access for hard of hearing customers.

In addition to overcoming these misconceptions that there is no need for electronic intercoms is awareness of options. Historically, in the US, there have been two manufacturers of electronic intercoms, each of which has essentially 2 systems. Both of those manufacturers systems look the same and appear to have been designed in the 1950’s. Additionally, both claim bullet resistance ratings however neither are officially UL752 certified.

However, there is a third manufacturer, Contacta, that offers literally 18 variations of kits! Complete Hearing Solutions, out of St. Petersburg, Fl (www.completehearingsolutions.org) is an authorized reseller and installer of these systems. Additionally, currently we are the only installer in Florida for this manufacturer. Having 18 options from one manufacturer allows for clients to select a system that suits them and their needs rather than being forced to use antiquated systems with limited design options. Lets begin to change the narrative and adopt the proper line of thinking – electronic intercoms are essential to providing clear and effective communication. Trying to talk through a hole in the glass, partially filled by metal, is no longer the best option.
